Data backup is the SECOND most important thing

Sure! Everyone does regular backups.

I mean, youd be crazy not to do any backups for your precious data. You do have regular backups, dont you? Lets face it, computers play a bigger role in our life than ever before. You work, shop, play using computers. The internet has replaced encyclopedias, libraries and even to a large degree the postal service. Our entire collection of thoughts, ideas, pictures, communications are stored in this box, which (and this may come a surprise) is far from perfect. In fact most people will buy the cheapest computer they can find, only to store their most precious belonging (think digital pictures).

And so, someone tells us we need to backup this information, and we find a solution, preferably free and if not free then again the cheapest we can find, set it up, and now were safe. Are we? 

In a recent market research conducted in the US and South Africa, 95% of the people interviewed reported that they have never tried to restore their backups. Here are some interesting statistics:  

1.  Out of the 95% who never tried to restore their backup, 86% discovered their backups dont work.
2. Out of all the people interviewed over 82% claimed they were not backing up all the information they require in case of a disaster.
3. 65% of the people interviewed only had 1 backup solution.
4. 100% of the people interviewed have never even thought of simulating a disaster recovery plan! These are all people who couldnt run their business without computers.

Regularly restoring data is the MOST IMPORTANT action!

Its all good to do regular backups, but one should also do regular restores. Its only when you restore data that you can find out if your backups are working, or if you have all the information you need.

We often work with large companies that have multiple backup plans in place, and when the IT department is interviewed, they claim they can recover from a disaster in a matter of minutes (which really means an hour or two). When management co-operates, we step in early in the morning, remove a server, and call the IT guys to come and "recover" from backup. It is only through this kind of simulation that companies, big and small, realize what needs to be done when a real emergency of data loss occurs, and in house IT department find out they are missing half the things they need to recover. From an estimate of complete restore in "a couple of minutes" we observed that companies can have their computer systems down (and thus a non functioning business) from 6 hours to a couple of days.
